Common ADHD Medication Side Effects: What You Can Do About Them
The most common side effects of ADHD medication, and practical ways to manage them.

read
It’s completely reasonable to wonder about side effects before starting ADHD medication.
The good news is that many people tolerate stimulant medication well. When side effects do occur, they are often mild and can sometimes improve as the body adjusts or after the medication, dose or timing is reviewed.
At Gavin Lobo Health, our guiding principle is:
Start Low. Go Slow.
Careful titration helps us balance symptom improvement against unwanted effects.
Reduced appetite
Stimulant medication can reduce appetite while it is active.
A practical strategy is to eat a good breakfast before or around the time you take your morning medication, particularly if you know your appetite becomes poor later.
If you regularly forget to eat, scheduled meals or reminders can help.
Persistent appetite suppression or unintended weight loss should be discussed with your clinician.
Dry mouth
Dry mouth is relatively common.
Regular water, sugar-free chewing gum and good dental hygiene can help.
Persistent dry mouth is worth addressing because saliva plays an important role in protecting your teeth.
Headaches
Headaches can occur when starting treatment.
Before assuming the medication itself is solely responsible, check some basics:
Have you eaten?
Have you had enough water?
Have you suddenly changed your caffeine intake?
Persistent or severe headaches should be reviewed.
Difficulty sleeping
Medication timing can be important.
Taking stimulant medication too late may interfere with sleep for some people.
Caffeine can add to the problem.
If sleep becomes consistently difficult after starting or increasing medication, discuss it with your clinician rather than making repeated dose changes yourself.
Heart rate and blood pressure
Stimulant medication can cause small increases in heart rate and blood pressure in some people.
This is one reason appropriate cardiovascular assessment and ongoing monitoring form part of safe stimulant prescribing.
Anxiety or feeling “too stimulated”
Some people notice increased nervousness, jitteriness or anxiety.
This can sometimes indicate that the dose or medication isn’t quite right, but caffeine, poor sleep, stress and other factors may also contribute.
Feeling emotionally flat
The aim of ADHD medication is not to remove your personality.
If you feel unusually detached, emotionally flat or unlike yourself, tell your clinician.
Successful treatment should help you function better while still feeling like you.
When should I seek urgent help?
Serious adverse reactions are uncommon, but symptoms such as significant chest pain, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, a serious allergic reaction, seizures, hallucinations or severe unusual behavioural changes require urgent medical assessment.
Side effects are information
Experiencing a side effect doesn’t automatically mean ADHD medication isn’t suitable for you.
It gives your clinician information.
Sometimes the solution is as simple as changing the dose or timing. In other situations, a different formulation or medication may be more appropriate.
The aim is always to find the best balance between benefit, safety and tolerability.
And remember:
Start Low. Go Slow.
