Approximately two out of three New Zealanders will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime, in part due to the harsh UV radiation from our sun. Left untreated, skin cancers have the potential to become life threatening, but when melanoma is caught at an early stage, up to 95% of cases can be cured, so regular self-assessment and an annual skin check matter.

What a skin check covers
Whether it's a routine annual check or a specific mole you're worried about, here's what's involved. About 80% of melanomas appear as a new mole on clear skin rather than from one you already have, which is why a full body check matters.

Some moles are harmless but still unwanted, catching on clothing, getting nicked when shaving, or knocking your confidence. Dr Lobo can remove these too, in the same visit as a skin check.

From $150. Costs for any follow-up surgical procedures vary depending on what's involved, and are talked through with you first.
Will I need to see a specialist?
Most cases are handled in-house. Referral to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon happens only when it's needed.
Is mole removal painful?
Removal and biopsy are carried out under local anaesthetic at the practice, so it shouldn't be painful during the procedure itself.
Can a mole be removed even if it isn't cancerous?
Yes. Cosmetic removal is available for moles that are harmless but unwanted, in the same visit as a skin check.
How often should I get a skin check?
An annual check is recommended for most people, alongside regular self-assessment in between. Dr Lobo will advise if you need to come back sooner for a specific mole.
What does dermoscopy involve?
A specialist tool is used to examine moles and lesions closely. Images are saved to your file and compared at future visits, so any changes are picked up early.
